The Meerkat's Danish Wedding Frock Bitchfest
message from The Meerkat on 15 May 2004
Aus.tv's Fashion Reporter, The Meerkat, casts her beady sartorial eye
over the Danish Royal Hitching, a la SBS morning broadcast (gad - you
didn't think I would stay up at midnight to watch it??)

Danish Castle Fishcam! What a concept - long lingering shot of Danish
castle at night...oooo, look! There's some car headlights!

Why does everyone sound like the Chef from the Muppets?

I've never seen so much blonde hair and so many tiaras assembled in
the one place.

Well, the bride was the most simply dressed of all - plain lace veil,
off the shoulder 1940's style, simple a-line, heavy off white silk.
Little makeup, basic no fuss hair style. She looked lovely, but I
thought a little underdressed for such a major occasion.

However, I would *not* have liked her to look like Princess Di on her
wedding day - I still cringe at the image of that frilly, crushed silk
bell jar with the ridiculous train.

Love her hubby's toilet brush epaulettes ("military shoulder
decorations" for you uncouth types out there).

Nice to see the old dowager princesses have been let out for an airing
- chance for them to buy a bright formal frock and to drag out the
family jools.

Highlight - the young lady with the close fitting, sheer red gown with
silver brooches below the shoulders - lovely.

Lowlight - some middle aged broad in a hideous, billowing hot pink
sequined number. Yikes!

Ladies,if you have to wear the family sash, then make sure that your
gown's colour matches it. I spied a pale blue and white sash against
hot red fabric - pale blue and hot red! Brrrrr...

And what's with this fascination for lime green - too much lime green
gowns for my liking. If you have a full figure like some of these
dowagers, then lime green gives you a Shrek physique.

Lots of colour, plenty of smiles, tonnes of tiaras, military uniforms,
one kilt, Prince Edward's bald patch. What more could one want from a
wedding?

I dig therefore I am.

I only wish there were more occasions for you to cast your fashionista eye
over ;)

thanks.

There'll be an unofficial aus.tv get-together soon, I'm sure the
photos from that will keep her occupied for many an hour.

Ooooo...a fan of the Meerkat's! Ta! I'm always on the hunt for a
good fashion bitchfest. ;-)

BTW - loved the bridesmaids' outfits. Sort of a reddish fuschia,
simple and flattering sheaths with bolero tops. Although the Danish
style 60s hairdos were a little severe.

I thought she looked quite elegant IMHO. Simple not complicated just elegant

A simple, short, jewelled necklace would have removed some of the
bareness of her shouders.
A Meerkat correction - gown was in satin, not silk. Cheapskates! Satin
is not as pricey as silk, and I think the dress would have looked
better in a heavy silk.

She was the fiance of a Spanish prince.

And what about that girl on Today Tonight claiming she was the one
that got the couple together yet she never got a wedding invite?

Oh yeh! Middle aged? - you're being very kind ..... and the silly old
fart in the kilt (not her father - another one), a kilt that was
w-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-y too short!!

I'm sure there's a standard/regulation/traditional length kilts should
be, but this old bugger looked like he was wearing a "mini-kilt" - he
looked positively stupid!!

The simplicity is exactly why she stood out. Exquisite.

Wonder what Liz's more important engagement was. Probably one of her
birthdays.

Which one? I took a look last night and saw about half a dozen middle
aged women in hot pink who should have known better.

As for the rest of them, oh the horror! There was one *very* thin young
lady in a tight red dress who looked nice, but the rest of them were
hilariously bad!!

One young lady looked liked she should have been turning up to her *own*
wedding in her cheap white wedding dress!! Then there was the one in
this pale purple thing with a funny neckline (kinda like fingers
pointing at her neck) who looked like she'd been poured into the dress,
only she had a bit left over, so she decided to spill out over the
sides, in a word, ugly (and the worst thing is, I think this one was
Australian!)! Or the one who was wearing a dark coloured dress, and
white shoes!!!! Whoever told her that looked good should be killed by
the Royal firing sqad! Far too many chunky ladies wearing sleeveless
dresses and far too many unmentionably ugly outfits.

Part of me was laughing hilariously, the other part of me was recoiling
in horror thinking to myself, "how on earth could possibly think you
look good in that dress lady?".

In all, I don't think I've seen worse fashion, ever! I've seen year 12
formals look better than that. Me thinks I should have sent over my Yr
12 formal dress. Sure, it might be electric blue, but it's a much better
dress than most of what I saw last night.
