Gold/Silver Discrimination Test
message from Calif Searcher on 27 Jun 2002
Ran tests for sensitivity/discrimination for Whites BeachHunter and
Coinmaster series on light gold chins, light siver chains and heavy
gold chains. Neither will identify light chains in siver or gold,
both find heavy gold chains. With all metal will find all but who
will be willing to dig every all metal target. Comments?

Most of the light weight gold chain and jewelry is made of an alloy with
little gold content. As a result, it will often ID incorrectly.

The only way to find everything is to dig everything. Small jewelry items,
dimes, and nickels are often obscured by foil or iron.

What detector are you using? There is a bit of a conflict in your statement
with the detectors I have used. Nickels, foil, and jewelry are close match
points but not iron and dimes.

No I wouldn't be willing to dig all targets in all metal unless I knew I was in
a hot spot. In my area, most hot spots are in a small section of ground with
lots of trash in between. If I'm in an area where I believe there could be a
lot of gold and silver then out comes the LST and there is no question what it
will find, grin.

When looking for gold, dig every signal. You will dig up a lot of junk,
but the gold is hiding under the signals that usually turn out to be pop
tops. A gold ring, a nickel, and a pop top have just about the same
signature. I mainly use a White's XLT, and the only signal that I
absolutely know is right every time is a quarter. When that machine
says it's a quarter, it definitely is. Just one notch over from a
quarter though is a whole aluminum can flattened out and buried. I
wonder why people do that? What's so hard about throwing it in the
trash? Anyway, the only way to know for sure you are signaling gold is
to use a gold detecting machine, or have taken the time to "know" your
machines and recognize the different signals you get from items. Until
you have learned your machine's idiosyncrasies, dig every signal. Happy
hunting. http://gpoc.com/induart21.htm

Hi Daddio, When you refere to a" gold machine ",I'm wondering if you found
a new kind of detector that I've not heard of.I use a sd2200d and a 18000
when I go west for nugget hunting. The gold machines are nothing more than a
all metal mechine with a high price tag. Some will disc.between ferros and
nonferros but they wont tell you if its a coin, nugget, or an alum. can.Its
"safer" to dig all signals. Besides, I've only heard of one man getting rich
treasure hunting, Mel Fisher, and he's gone now.I'm not trying to flame
anyone with this post, just trying to clear the air.I also use a Minelab Sov.
and it don't tell me much more. Just my two cents worth. cheers..Bob in
Ohio :)

I dig everything. Hunt in places you expect to find gold and dig it all.
The bonus, in addition to getting the gold, will be the number of nickels
that have been passed as junk by those using discrimination. My machines
that are capable of discrimination have seldom if ever been in that mode.

Just thought I would comment that I discrimate but below foil and
above nails. I know that is the right level since I have found many
nickels as well as gold. Does mean digging pull tabs and heavy pieces
of foil.
