Amethysts, was Re: Emerald rings?

So what is the probability of an amethyst surviving use as an
engagement ring?

Amethysts are great, and relatively hardy. I've damaged an emerald ring,
but haven't had a similar problem with my amethyst ring. That brings me to
my next point, though. I used to wear a large amethyst ring on my left
hand, and more than one out-of-the-closet lesbian asked me if they knew
the girl to whom I was engaged. One day I finally asked a friend why I was
getting these questions and she explained that, at least in our Boston
community, purple was the color of lesbian pride, and amethyst rings were
often exchanged between a woman-woman couple as a sign of commitment.

I love amethysts, and would like to know if anyone else has run into this
situation. Now that I've moved to Texas, no one gives me a second look
when I wear this ring. Go figure.

So - does anyone out there have the latest in popular culture/lore
concerning amethysts?
