Stems and flights - worth tinkering with?
message from Tommo ? on 7 Jul 2005
I've seen it mentioned that the best all round length for stems is
"Medium", and the best shape for flights is "Standard". By best
I assume they mean stability, balance, consistency etc.

I have to use Short stems stop the back of the dart catching my face
when throwing, so I doubt I can make a go of trying Medium stems, and
I'm stuck with them.

The only reason I use Pear shaped flights though is because they seem
to obscure the board less when throwing the 2nd and 3rd darts, so this
could be a change I make.

How important do you think these two aspects are? The darts in question
are long, slim, 27g (Hi Tec "The Vice", shark cut). Is it worth
tinkering with the stems and flights or are the differences too
negligible?

Definitely worth tinkering with. Stems and flights are cheap, and in
my opinion make a huge difference. I don't know if I'd agree with
whoever said that medium stems are the best length to use. To me it is
the length of the overall dart that matters. On my longer barrels I
use short nylon shafts, and on my shorter barrels I use the medium
nylon shafts. (Typically - I have a short barrel that flies equally
well with either a short or long aluminum.) As for flights, I use
either standard shaped (dimpled or smooth interchangably) or Spiraline.
I only ever use slim flights on my lighter darts. HTH. Zeeple.

I tend to use slim flights of combat shaped flights as they tend to
flatten out the darts trajectory and obscure less space on the board.

however, it all depends on how fast and how much power you throw your darts
with... I am more of a lobber, so my speed is not fast enough to affect with
changes in flights or shafts..

what has changed things for me is the weight of dart, and trying to throw
harder... kk

In my experience flights particularly make a huge difference. I have settled
on kite shaped flights but used to throw pear shaped. Dimpled flights are
slightly heavier and give me more control.

You would be surprised what flights weigh. On any dart they can add a gram
or two. I measured my darts on some sensitive scales and was shocked at the
difference in weight various flights make.

We have a brand new player in our team who doesnt really care about his
darts setup. To demonstrate just how important flights are I asked him to
throw his three darts without any flights - he soon got keen :-)

the flights act as stabilizers... HOWEVER, I have met a couple people who
throw nails, and they are deadly accurate... I still believe allot has to do
with speed and style of grip and throw... and on it goes... round and
round... :-) kk

Thanks. I'll try paying more attention to the angle in my hand rather
than just the way I hold the barrel. I've definately had many
unexplained bounce outs where the wire doesn't seem to have been hit,
and this will probably because as you say the angle was too great and
the broadside hit.

Damn - that must be about 3,000 points "on the floor" this week alone.
I must sort this out :o)
